Re-homing a German Wirehaired Pointer *PLEASE READ*

German Wirehaired Pointer Club Rescue (GWPCRescue) is the only official Kennel Club-recognised Rescue organisation for the German Wirehaired Pointer. We deal with true rescues and abandonments along with those dogs which are required to be re-homed for personal reasons. Please bear in mind that each of the dogs we feature is genuinely in need of a new home.

This forum has been designed to showcase the various German Wirehaired Pointers that currently are looking for new homes - their description is updated as the situation changes, so read through their information first before contacting GWPC Rescue.

GWPs in Rescue fall into two broad categories; dogs who are given up by their owner for personal reasons, and dogs found wandering as strays or abandoned or those which are brought over from Ireland (dogs truly in need of rescue). We are happy to assist in re-homing dogs for personal reasons; the donations which we invite go towards helping dogs genuinely in need of ‘rescuing’.

Where a dog’s history and background is known, this information is published in good faith on the dog’s listing on the Forum and a judgment can be made with regard to re-homing with cats, other pets or children. In the case of a stray or a dog brought from Ireland, the background is not known so we exercise great care when re-homing these dogs and will not, as a general rule, re-home them with cats or families with small children.

We do occasionally rescue GWPs from Ireland - ideally we would like to find a new home over here before they start their journey otherwise we need to either foster them or put them in kennels. We usually know little about these dogs as mostly they are found abandoned and taken to one of the various Pounds where they are likely to be destroyed unless we can extract them. (But if you would like to know how rewarding rescuing these dogs can be, speak to Rescue Co-ordinator Ian Roberts about his dogs Hector and Phoebe).

We receive many enquiries from people interested in re-homing a GWP and sorry to say, one or two of these people just want a cheap dog. We do not sell dogs but neither do we give them away. Please bear in mind that a GWP puppy can cost up to £1000 and annual costs of keeping a dog are not inconsiderable. GWPC Rescue is run entirely by volunteers who give freely of their time and has significant expenses (vets’ fees, boarding, home checks) so on re-homing a dog we invite the new owner to make a donation to Rescue funds. If you feel unable to do this then perhaps you should consider whether you can afford to have a dog at all. UK Rescue Co-ordinator Ian Roberts will be pleased to give guidance as to appropriate sums.

The process involved in adopting a dog through GWP Rescue is quite straightforward and, after initial contact, will require the prospective adopter to have a home-check to confirm the suitability and security of the new home. The adopter is then put in touch with the dog’s current owner and if all is well, arrangements are made for the adopter, their family and their dog(s) to meet the GWP and owner and perhaps go for a walk together to make sure all get on well. At this point a firm decision can be made with regard to the re-homing and arrangements made for the GWP to be handed over. If a home check has already been completed then the procedure will be speeded considerably.

Our preference is for adopters who have experience of the breed, as GWPs are not for everyone. However, we do sometimes have GWPs surrendered to us that we feel could be suitable to a first-time owner.

Please note that Registration papers and pedigree documents (where they exist) are retained by GWPC Rescue and not handed over to the new owner. Dogs will be castrated and bitches spayed before re-homing. Only in exceptional circumstances will entire dogs be re-homed.

If you would like to be considered to adopt a GWP from GWPC Rescue and if you haven’t already done so, please read the Rescue pages on the main website, and then contact UK Rescue Coordinator Ian Roberts and tell us about yourself - your experience with GWPs and dogs generally, your environment and particularly the security of your garden, where you live, what other animals you have, and what your household working hours are (e.g. if and for how long the dog will be left at any time). Please ensure that all members of your family are in agreement to adopt a GWP.

Please note, by registering with Rescue you are not joining a waiting list - you are just expressing an interest in re-homing a GWP at some point in the future. We ask that anyone who is interested in a particular dog contact us, and we will then see what we can do. We do NOT operate a 'Waiting List' - you need to contact us if a dog you are interested in appears.

The information given on the various dogs' threads is given in good faith and is based on information provided by the current owner. Prospective new owners should satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of all statements made.

Please enjoy looking at the dogs we are currently helping.
