Oscar was given up to a local pound where he was found by one of our Irish friends who managed to extract him to a place of safety when his seven days were up. We have heard from his breeder that Oscar was given up because he was gun-shy and because he was not getting on with his springer spaniel kennel-mates.
Oscar is now being cared for by GWPC Rescue in this country and has now been assessed as follows:-
'Oscar is a very wiggly, bouncy and friendly lad who enjoys being with people and other dogs. He is fine with children but like many young dogs could knock them over by accident.
His recall to name and whistle is improving daily and he also stays close when out and about on walks. He doesn't know basic obedience commands yet but he is a quick learner and is coming along fast. Taking well to the lead and walking to heel and is a pleasure to exercise.
Oscar is happy to be left and enjoys being in his crate and crate use will be encouraged in his new home. Although he can be a 'counter-surfer', when he is told 'no' or 'off' he listens straight away.
Oscar would be happy in any type of home with both children and other dogs. He can be vocal towards strangers in the house but again this is improving. As a result of the way he has been handled in the past he can be a bit timid so advice on his further training and handling will be given. He shows little signs of being house aware so it is thought he has lived in a kennel so help with house training will be needed. He is getting used to the noises that come with a busy household but sudden loud noises/bangs do upset him and make him drop to the ground. This is being worked on with the use of a sound cd'.
We are looking for a GWP-experienced home for Oscar, ideally with other dogs, where his background is understood and where his training and development can be continued. We do not consider Oscar to be suitable for novice owners. His boundless energy may cause inadvertent accidents with small children so we will only consider homes with children 10+.
If you would like to learn more about Oscar from his assessor please telephone UK Rescue Co-ordinator Ian Roberts on 01359 253565 to register your interest.
Oscar is docked, vaccinated, castrated and microchipped. We are currently arranging the transfer of the Irish microchip registration to this country.
All prospective homes will be checked for suitability.
3 December 2008 - Oscar's age confirmed as 18 months (dob 7 June 2007)
